Green Corn

In Korea, vegetable gardens or fences of rural houses were planted with corn.
Tall corn plants around the houses added more to the scenery in summer and, when the corncobs became as big as forearm, peasants felt the joy of first harvest.
They boiled or roasted green corn to take it for their food or for snacks of children.
Corn was described in a book as “a woman standing by the fence with her baby on her back”. This offers a glimpse at the idyllic life in the countryside and the humble humanity of peasants in those days.
At first, corn was boiled and roasted to eat, and later was made into corn-flour rice, noodles, jelly, pancake, cake and so on for staple foods. It was also malted to substitute barley in making taffy and liquor.
