Spicy Pollack Soup
In the past, Kilju, Chongjin, Myongchon, Kyongsong and Puryong areas of North Hamgyong Province were renowned for pollack.
An old tale says that a fisherman, surnamed Thae, lived in Myongchon County of Hamgyong Province and he was the first to catch the fish. Hence the fish was named myongthae in Korean after the first letters of the names of the place and the fisherman.
Pollack is called by several names. As it is caught in large quantities, it is used as daily food in all seasons, even in mountainous regions.
